LA PHOTO DU LUNDI #47
(MONDAY'S PICTURE)
LET THERE BE LIGHT!
"Using color and light to direct the minds of the faithful
by material means towards the immaterial..."
This is how the historian and adviser to Louis VI and Louis VII, Abbot Suger,
defined the function of religious stained glass.
Symbol of the sacred light ?
Transcendence of the divine?
Can you imagine the artisans preparing their gray with oxides of iron or copper and vinegar?
Can you imagine this one firing of the glass at 600° C to secure the gray?
Can you imagine the glass makers using the silver stain?
Can you imagine a man discovering a new range of colors : yellow, orange?
Can you imagine a father maybe, assembling the precious panels maintained by metal rods?
I can definitely imagine all of them
And I feel bless
That 500 years afterwards
I am able to contemplate their phenomenal masterpieces...
